Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise as a little girl. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, allowed her to study literature for art as well as theater during daylight hours. She showed DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay discovered through her example that art could be an avenue for action. DuVernay's mother also had an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay to express herself via art. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and brought up. Her father was a witness to the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. Her summers in Selma, Alabama would inspire her later to make an animated film on Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a high school diploma in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism when she was just a student. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to watch the home of one of the members of the jury, and then go through their garbage. When she was dissatisfied with journalism by the tasks she was handed, DuVernay decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a Junior Publicist shortly after graduating from college. She was promoted to the position and set up her own PR company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. The company launched a number of promotions and lifestyle channels, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
